About the ArtistSarah started knitting at the age of eight under the direct tutelage of her mother Jeanne. Her skill as a knitter and natural creativity led to the sale of her first sweater in the late 70 s. In the search for a more portable project---one that could be packed easily and picked up during travel---Sarah turned to her sister, Nancy, to learn how to needlepoint. Sarah has been selling her handmade garments in a variety of venues over the years, to include shops in NYC, the Washington Art Association in Washington Ct, the Event Under the Tent on Nantucket Island and the Nantucket Looms. Her garments are made from high-end yarns that include cashmere, merino wool, alpaca, angora and natural cottons. Her patterns are created by herself and her final products---from design to buttons--- represent those things she holds close to her heart---her country and the island of Nantucket. This past year, Sarah teamed up with a master stitch painter to create a line of needlework canvases that were not only unique, but affordable. The designs of her belts, dog colors, pillows and mini-Xmas stockings have very specific island flair and are perfect expressions of all the beauty Nantucket provides. These two mediums are the foundation of Nantucket Island Designs. |
